2017 Great South West Dairy Awards

The Winners

Macarthur dairy farmers Peter and Fiona Musson won the Gardiner Foundation Farm Business Manager of the Year Award after impressing the judges with their vision and professional approach to running a farm business. The Mussons farm in Macarthur and milk 780 cows together with their four full-time and one part-time staff. The farm business has been performing consistently well and the Mussons have demonstrated their ability to adapt to the changing conditions. The runners up of the awards were Ben and Anna Kenna.

 

Grassmere farmers Isaac and Michelle Johnstone were recognised for their approach to creating an efficient and well-oiled team with the Dairy Australia Employer of the Year Award. The Johnstone’s have a strong emphasis on ensuring compliance and safety in their farm business. They have created a good system of communication, allowing input from the employees. There were two encouragement awards given out on the night, acknowledging the businesses’ working towards implementing best practice procedures. The people recognised were Lauren Peterson and Tony Hassett, and Phil and Symone Vines. 

 

The award for Murray Goulburn Employee of the Year went to Jorge Massa, a farm manager from Cooriemungle, for his impressive range of both technical and staff management skills. Jorge has been working on the Cooriemungle farm for three years after a wide range of other employment experiences in factory work and public service. A qualified veterinarian and great leader of the team, Jorge has become an indispensable part of the farm business.

 

Todd and Madeline Leddin from Toolong received the Cowbank Share Farmer of the Year Award after the judges scored them highly for their approach to benchmarking profit, equity building and farm investments. The Leddins have achieved significant equity growth by rearing heifers and buying cattle to increase their share of the herd over the last four and a half years. Their dedication to farming and the way they approach share faming impressed the judges and makes them worthy winners. The runners-up were Aaron and Cassandra Crole.

 

Standing out for his passionate involvement in the community and the local industry Andrew Powell from Cooriemungle was rewarded with the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Young Farm Leader of the Year Award.  Andrew has been the leader of the Port Campbell Discussion group for several years, he is part of the Regional Extension Committee, focus support groups and regularly participates in the Timboon Agriculture Project. He I also involved with the Port Campbell SES and Port Campbell SLC. Through his experiences with community groups, Andrew built his leadership skills, which had a positive impact on the way he manages the staff on his family’s 500 cow farm. The runner- up was Lauren Peterson.  

 

The Colac, Corangamite and Wannon UDV Branches Natural Resource and Sustainability Award went to Max and Pam Wines from Ecklin South for their shelter belt plantings on the farm, the effective re-use of dairy effluent for forage production, and just recently the move into large scale renewable energy with the installation of a 400 solar panels to power the farm’s irrigation system. The quality of all applicants impressed the judges and as a result there are two runners up in this category: Eddie and Sharon Kenna and Matt, John & Helen Glennen.

 

The WestVic Dairy Farm Photo of the Year was snapped by Jess Fleming from Gorae West capturing the first moments between cow and calf. The shot was taken on Jessa’s farm in Gorae West and perfectly captures life on the farm, according to the judges.

 

The Awards Ceremony

The 2017 Great South West Dairy Awards will be held on 17th May at Deakin University Warrnambool. The event will commence at 6:15pm with drinks and canapes followed by a three course meal and the awards ceremony.
